Member Groups > Stevenage Arts Society

The Stevenage Arts Society has over a hundred members and is based in Springfield House. This period house is a community centre, situated at the northern end of the High Street in Stevenage Old Town. The society has been based at Springfield House since 1972 and runs a number of events there. Some members have privately rented studios in the building. There are three exhibitions of members work held during the year. There are weekly sessions for painting and drawing plus ceramics workshops. Members are able to fire their ceramics using the society's kiln.

The society was created in 1968 at the behest of the New Town Development Corporation and was originally called the Artists' Co-operative when conceived by a group of Stevenage painters.

The aim of the Corporation and these painters was of "Fostering the Arts in Stevenage".

The society remains a totally amateur, non-political and democratic organization run by an annually elected executive committee.

Membership of the society is open to anyone interested in participating in the fine arts and willing to abide by the society's rules and customs.
